To comply with the national environmental policy, strengthen the planning and promotion of environmental protection and implement the environmental management of the campus, NTNU established the Environmental and Public Safety Center and later on upgraded the Center to a first-level unit on November 29, 2013. The Center is responsible for supervision and management of campus environmental protection and for ensuring safety of laboratory facilities. On August 1, 2015, the Center divided its functions into 3 divisions, namely the Strategic Planning, Environmental Protection, and Occupational Safety.
The Center’s major responsibilities are to prevent pollutions on campus, and to ensure the safety of laboratories, factories and other issues related to environmental safety and hygiene. The Center places an emphasis on educating university students and employees on environmental protection. It also conducts research and on environmental issues and raise public awareness for environmental issues. In addition, it provides planning services for environment-related issues.
The Center is an expansion of the previous Environmental Education Center. After the structural reorganization, the Center continues to facilitate works on environmental education and hygiene monitoring. It remains dedicated to promoting environmental protection through a computerized platform as well as strengthening cooperation with the industry, government, and academia.
The main tasks of the Center are listed as follows:
  1. The planning and promotion of campus environment pollution prevention.
  2. The planning and promotion of health and safety of the workplace at campus laboratories, internship sites, and other working environments.
  3. The planning and promotion of educational advocacy for campus environmental protection.
  4. Research, services, and promotion pertaining to environmental protection.
  5. The planning and promotion of other matters related to environmental protection.
  6. The panning and promotion of energy monitoring and management.
The Center will continue to promote and strengthen its functions with future focus areas listed as follows:
  1. To investigate the current situation and the needs of the health and safety of the campus environment that are relevant to the various units of the University; to formulate future management plans.
  2. To computerize data of the environmental protection center including an industrial waste notification system, a recycling information system, the establishment of database for the educational training of environmental health and safety, and the establishment, updates and maintenance of the environmental protection center website information.
  3. To promote the automatic inspection system of the environmental health and safety at the laboratory and internship facilities and to obtain health and safety certification for laboratory and internship facilities.
  4. To strengthen the research and promotion of the ecological conservation and ecological education.
  5. To formulate cooperation projects and promote activities among the government, industry, academic, and research sectors pertaining to environmental protection and environmental education.
  6. To promote energy saving and carbon emission reduction, and enhance energy effective application mechanisms.
